Network Management and Monitoring

TCP/IP for VSE®

Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol

Platform: z/VSE and VSEⁿ

TCP/IP FOR VSE  provides a complete solution for connecting the mainframe to today's Internet world.

U.S. Patent: 11,108,671

Our TCP/IP stack provides a seamless interface with the Internet, allowing VSE mainframe applications to participate fully in the global business arena

Built-in tools make VSE functions and facilities immediately available to network-attached users

Optional and third-party products bring the full power and reliability of mainframe computing to the e-Commerce world

Standard stack features

  • Runs on a range of operating system versions
  1. 2.3.x is running on 21st Century Software's VSEn V6.3 and IBM's z/VSE V6.2*
  2. 2.2.x is for running on IBM's z/VSE V6.2
  3. 2.1.x is for running on IBM's z/VSE V6.1
  4. 1.5F/G is for running on IBM's z/VSE V5 and below

*Note: 2.3.x will also run on older z/VSE releases. These older z/VSE releases are out of service for technical support from IBM, but CSI will support TCP/IP FOR VSE unless the issue is related to the operating system

  • Supports network connections via OSA (LCS) and OSA-Express® adapters in an Ethernet network. Some legacy network types are still accepted.
  • Extensive monitoring and tuning capabilities that can be extended to any level of granularity, including specific destination addresses
  • Customizable security features protect both network access and configuration information
  • Built-in connection management provides request queuing and automatic detection and clean-up of “lost” connections
  • A complete set of servers, including TN3270, FTP, and LPD
  • Client software such as FTP, LPR, Email, and Telnet
  • Additional support software, such as PDF creation

Additional optional features distributed with TCP/IP FOR VSE:

  • CSI Firewall Shield—Network Security
  • GPS—General Print Server
  • SecureFTP—SSL/TLS-enabled FTP server and client
  • SSL/TLS—Secure Sockets Layer/Transport Layer Security
  1. CSI internal cryptographic services for applications using SSL 3.0, TLS 1.1, and TLS 1.2 protocols
  2. OPENSSL third-party cryptographic services for applications using TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3 protocols
  • See-TCP/IP—Performance monitor for VSE and TCP/IP

Standard features of TCP/IP FOR VSE to consider implementing:

  • FTP—File Transfer Protocol
  1. Easy, direct access to VSAM, BIM-Edit, LIBR, VSE/POWER, ICCF, and other VSE resident files
  2. VSAM KSDS files can be retrieved completely or by key range
  3. FTPBATCH for quick, easy, efficient batch FTP transfers
  4. Automatically send VSE/POWER files directly to end users
  5. Convert text files to PDF format for easy viewing
  6. Allow users and applications to retrieve and store files on Windows, Linux, z/OS, z/VM, or any other platform running the TCP/IP protocol
  7. Securely transfer confidential files with the SecureFTP feature
  • Telnet TN3270 server
  1. Allow users to log directly onto 3270 VTAM applications such as CICS
  2. End users use a TN3270 PC client to directly access the VSE system
  3. LPR client for printing directly to printers on remote hosts
  4. Automatic printing of VSE/POWER LST queue entries to remote printers
  • Multiple printing solutions
  1. General Print Server (GPS) services for sending CICS VTAM TN3270 printer data to remote LPD servers running on any other platform
  2. LPR client for sending VSE/POWER queue files to any other platform running an LPD server
  3. LPD server on VSE for receiving printer data into the VSE/POWER queue from any platform running an LPR client
  4. PDF conversion service to turn VSE/POWER LST queue files into PDF format that can then be sent directly from VSE to any other platform using FTP or EMAIL
  • Email
  1. Batch client to email most VSE-resident files directly to remote users
  2. PDF generation of text and embedded graphics is also available
  • Web
  1. Provide static HTML pages to any browser
  • Easy configuration with standard VSE library members
  • Ping, Traceroute, DISCOVER, and other powerful tools allow a site to analyze its TCP/IP network from VSE
  • Advanced diagnostics for detailed problem analysis
  • User-defined security processing to limit access or functions to a remote user or group of users
  • Control message output and, if you have CSI's FAQS/ASO® product, inspect TCP/IP FOR VSE activities and automate VSE processing; for example, submit a job when an FTP has completed

Create your own TCP/IP FOR VSE applications with the provided Application Programming Interfaces (APIs):

  • SOCKET MACRO interface for Assembler programs
  • BSD/C interface useable from C, COBOL, Assembler, or any other language that supports standard linkage
  • EZASOCKET calls by all languages are also supported for easier portability
  • High-Level Preprocessor Interface for COBOL, PL1, or Assembler
  • Cryptographic interfaces for using SSL/TLS with strong encryption algorithms like AES, Triple-DES, RSA, or SHA1, MD5, and support for third-party OPENSSL cryptographic services
  • Socket interface for REXX programs
  • Examples are available to speed up program development
