Data Management + Storage Management

zDataConnect

Read and write sequential (QSAM) files remotely

Platform: z/OS

zDataConnect is a Z/OS system utility function that permits customer applications to read and write QSAM datasets between remote z/OS computer systems without any application changes.

Key Benefits:

No changes to your application programs

No application programming interface is needed, and therefore there are no function calls to code. To enable your applications to interact with zDataConnect’s subsystem, you only need to add a subsystem definition to a dataset’s DD statement in the application’s JCL.

Operational Simplicity

There is no user interface to learn or panels to navigate. zDataConnect’s components control all dataset processing internally. Operation is automatic; once you enable your zDataConnect configuration, there is no manual process to manage. The only requirement is that the applications that use zDataConnect’s subsystem reside in an APF-authorized library.

Peace of Mind

If you manage one or more data centers, you can rest easy knowing that manually initiated file transfers of critical data are no longer needed. zDataConnect avoids the problems associated with staff training, scheduling, and contingency planning.

Why zDataConnect?

Today’s distributed data centers present real challenges for operators who need to keep application data current across all locations. zDataConnect greatly simplifies data center operations by eliminating the need for file transfers to synchronize your applications’ data across multiple locations.

More zDataConnect features

  • zDataConnect simplifies data center operations by allowing local programs on a z/OS system to directly read from or write to remote datasets over the Internet. By accessing datasets in remote data centers directly, zDataConnect eliminates the need for file transfers to retrieve remote data.
  • Programs can now control data acquisition from remote locations as well as storage and subsequent report generation of combined data.
  • zDataConnect uses a z/OS subsystem on the program’s host system to establish a client session with a zDataConnect server on a remote system. The subsystem, functioning as an extension to the QSAM access method, intercepts read/write requests and sends them to the server. The server in turn spawns a process to execute each request on the target dataset.
  • You can install zDataConnect software on multiple remote systems, and the zDataConnect subsystem on the local system establishes discreet client sessions with each zDataConnect server.
  • zDataConnect is an interface to programs, but no program changes are required. No program reassembly is needed, either. Only JCL changes are needed! The subsystem uses a proprietary approach to intercept a program’s open/close/get/put operations.
  • zDataConnect supports programs coded in any language that runs under z/OS such as COBOL, PL/I, C/C++, and Assembler.
  • zDataConnect supports physical sequential, PDS, and PDSE target dataset organizations.
  • You define the client and server parameters and each target-dataset’s file-access parameters, in separate parameter members.
  • An activity log shows all zDataConnect client and server activity with date- and time-stamped entries.
  • zDataConnect is AT-TLS aware and supports this functionality with all connections.
